Quick answer
The cheapest FDA-approved hair loss treatment online is Keeps at $14 a month, visit included, on a multi-month plan. Our top-scored program, Ro, sells finasteride from $16 a month on a 12-month plan. Over-the-counter minoxidil from Keeps starts at $8.92 a month. Prices checked November 5, 2026.

"Cheapest" depends on which drug you mean, and on how many months you pay at once. This guide ranks the three low-cost routes (finasteride tablets, oral minoxidil and topical minoxidil), shows what each program asks you to prepay, and says where the evidence and the labels are thin. For the full ranked list of programs, see Best men's health programs; every hair loss price sits on our hair loss price page.

The cheapest route for each drug

Treatment FDA status for hair loss Lowest monthly price we found Where
Finasteride tablets Approved (male pattern hair loss) $14 Keeps, multi-month billing; also Ro at $16
Oral minoxidil Off-label (approved for high blood pressure) $18 Happy Head, 6-month supply; also Strut Health at $18.33
Topical minoxidil (foam or solution) Over the counter $8.92 Keeps; also sold in any pharmacy
Hims minoxidil serum Over the counter $15 Hims, billing terms not stated

Every figure is the program's own listed price on the date above. The lowest numbers usually need a 3- to 12-month plan, so the first bill is larger than the monthly figure suggests.

Cheapest finasteride online

Finasteride is the only prescription tablet in this list that the FDA has approved for male pattern hair loss. The Propecia label says it "is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in MEN ONLY" (DailyMed: Propecia label).

Online, the lowest all-in price is $14 a month at Keeps, shown beside a struck-through price, so it may be a first-order figure. Ro charges $16 a month on a 12-month plan. If you already have a prescription, a cash pharmacy is cheaper still: Cost Plus Drugs lists about $0.19 a tablet before shipping. The full comparison is in our finasteride cost guide.

Cheapest minoxidil subscription

Two different products sell under the minoxidil name, and they are not interchangeable.

Topical minoxidil is sold without a prescription. The Rogaine label reads "Use to regrow hair on the top of the scalp" and says "you may need to use this product for at least 4 months before you see results" (DailyMed: Men's Rogaine foam label). Because it is over the counter, a program subscription is rarely the cheapest way to buy it; compare the shelf price at a pharmacy with the $8.92 a month Keeps lists.

Oral minoxidil is a prescription tablet. Its label was written for severe high blood pressure, and the boxed warning says: "Minoxidil tablets contain the powerful antihypertensive agent, minoxidil, which may produce serious adverse effects" (DailyMed: minoxidil tablets label). Prescribing it for hair loss is off-label, so ask your clinician how you will be monitored. In a 24-week trial, oral minoxidil "did not demonstrate superiority over topical minoxidil" on the main measure (Penha et al., JAMA Dermatology). The cheaper tablet is therefore not clearly the better one.

What makes a cheap plan expensive

  • Prepayment. A low monthly figure on a 6- or 12-month plan means paying several months up front. Happy Head says standard, higher pricing applies if you cancel or pause.
  • Compounded products. Sprays, gels and capsules that combine finasteride, minoxidil and other drugs cost more per month than the plain generics, and they are not FDA-approved. The FDA says: "Currently, there is no FDA-approved topical formulation of finasteride" (FDA alert).
  • Visit fees. Some programs charge a consultation fee after the first visit. Check the review page before you subscribe.
  • State limits. Not every program serves every state, and a few exclude states for specific drugs.

Which option suits whom

  • You want an FDA-approved prescription tablet and a clinician: a finasteride plan from the top of the table, then check whether the program will send refills to your own pharmacy.
  • You already have a prescription: a cash pharmacy beats every program price.
  • You want the lowest-risk, lowest-cost start: over-the-counter topical minoxidil, with the evidence that it works slowly and only while you keep using it.
  • You are considering oral minoxidil: treat the price as the second question and monitoring as the first.

Finasteride has its own label warnings, including reports of "sexual dysfunction that continued after discontinuation of treatment" in the Propecia label linked above. Read them before you start. We do not give doses.

If you are choosing between the two main drugs, finasteride vs minoxidil compares them, and finasteride and minoxidil together prices combination products against two generics.

Questions

FAQ

What is the cheapest hair loss treatment online?

Over-the-counter minoxidil from $8.92 a month, then finasteride tablets from $14 a month with the visit included, as checked November 5, 2026. Finasteride is the FDA-approved prescription tablet for male pattern hair loss, so it is the cheapest approved prescription route. Lower prices usually require paying for several months at once.

What is the cheapest finasteride online?

Keeps lists the lowest finasteride price with the visit included, at $14 a month on multi-month billing, and Ro lists $16 a month on a 12-month plan. With your own prescription, Cost Plus Drugs is cheaper at about $0.19 a tablet before shipping. See the finasteride cost guide.

What is the cheapest minoxidil subscription?

For oral minoxidil, Happy Head lists $18 a month on a 6-month supply and Strut Health lists $18.33 a month. For topical, Keeps lists $8.92 a month. Topical minoxidil is over the counter, so compare a pharmacy shelf price before subscribing.

Is the cheapest hair loss treatment safe?

Price does not change the label. Finasteride and oral minoxidil both carry warnings that a prescriber should discuss with you, and oral minoxidil is off-label for hair loss. Topical minoxidil is over the counter, with warnings about chest pain and scalp irritation. Choose by safety and fit first, then price.

Do cheap online hair loss programs use real pharmacies?

Most name a US-licensed pharmacy or say the prescription can be filled elsewhere, but terms differ by program. The pharmacy, compounded or approved status and cancellation terms are on each review page. Compounded products are made by pharmacies and are not FDA-approved.

Does insurance cover hair loss treatment?

Usually not. Medicare Part D excludes drugs used for hair growth, and several programs state their treatments are not covered by insurance. Our finasteride insurance guide covers Medicare, Medicaid and private plans.

Is it cheaper to buy finasteride at a pharmacy than from an online program?

Often yes, if you already have a prescription. A program's price bundles the visit, refills and delivery. A cash pharmacy sells only the drug. Many men get the first prescription online, then ask whether refills can go to a cheaper pharmacy. For every program's monthly price side by side, see hair loss prices or our best programs ranking.
