Is Buying ED Pills Online Safe? How to Check a Pharmacy in 2026
Buying ED pills online is safe from a licensed US program with a real prescription. How to spot fakes, check a pharmacy licence and read a LegitScript seal.

Safety
Below: why ED drugs are a favourite of counterfeiters, a five-minute check you can run on any site, what a LegitScript seal does and does not prove, and how compounded products fit in.
Why ED pills attract fakes
Sildenafil and tadalafil are cheap to make, in steady demand, and bought by people who would rather not see a doctor in person. That mix draws sellers who skip the prescription.
The scale is old but stark. When the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy reviewed thousands of drug-selling websites, it reported that "88% do not require a valid prescription" (Pharmaceutical Commerce, on NABP's 2014 report).
The FDA also keeps finding ED drugs hidden in products sold as supplements. It warns that sexual enhancement products "are likely to be contaminated with dangerous hidden ingredients" (FDA: sexual enhancement product notifications). In one notice, its lab "confirmed that mR.7 SUPER 700000 contains sildenafil and tadalafil not listed on the product label" (FDA notice on mR.7 SUPER 700000). Hidden sildenafil is dangerous for men who take nitrates for heart disease, which is exactly why a real prescriber asks about them.
The five-minute check
Run these on any site before you pay. Our free scam checker walks through the same list.
- It asks for a prescription or sets up a consult. A site that will ship sildenafil with no questions about your health is selling outside the law.
- It lists a US address and phone number. Both are on the FDA's list of signs of a safe pharmacy.
- The pharmacy holds a state licence. The FDA says: "Checking a pharmacy’s license through your state board of pharmacy is an important step in knowing whether you are using a safe online pharmacy." (FDA: locate a state-licensed online pharmacy)
- The price is believable. The FDA warns against sites that "Offer deep discounts or prices that seem too good to be true." (FDA) Real generic sildenafil is already cheap; see what licensed programs charge on our ED price page.
- It names the pharmacy that fills your order. Telehealth programs often use partner pharmacies. The better ones name them, so you can run step 3 on the pharmacy itself.
- FDA-approved and compounded
- No FDA warning letter found
- No state list published
What a LegitScript seal proves
LegitScript certifies telehealth companies and pharmacies, and payment and ad platforms rely on it. A real seal is served by LegitScript with a seal ID tied to the site's domain. A logo image the site hosts itself proves nothing on its own.
What we found on the programs we track, checked on October 31, 2026:
| What the site shows | Programs |
|---|---|
| A LegitScript-served seal with a seal ID | BlueChew, Lemonaid, Maximus, Strut Health, Happy Head, Henry Meds, Hone Health, DudeMeds, Tuyo Health, and LifeMD for Rex MD |
| A link to LegitScript's checker, no seal ID we could read | Hims |
| A LegitScript image with no seal ID | Ro, Rugiet, MangoRx |
| No LegitScript seal found | Keeps, GoodRx Care, PeterMD |
LegitScript's public checker sits behind a captcha, so none of this is a verdict on certification. Look the program up yourself on LegitScript's site. A missing seal is a reason to check further, not proof of a problem, and a seal is not proof the price is fair.
Compounded ED products are legal, and not FDA-approved
Chews, mints, troches and multi-drug tablets from licensed telehealth programs are compounded by a pharmacy. That is legal with a prescription. It is also a different thing from an FDA-approved generic.
In September 2025 the FDA told one well-known seller: "Your claims imply that your products are the same as an FDA-approved product when they are not." (FDA warning letter to BlueChew). If you want the version the FDA has reviewed, ask for generic sildenafil or generic tadalafil tablets by name. Every plan on our ED price page is labelled one or the other.
Red flags at licensed programs too
Licensed does not mean problem-free. The things to read before you pay:
- Cancellation cutoffs. Most programs need notice 24 to 48 hours before the next order and refund nothing once the pharmacy has started.
- Prepaid plans. Some low monthly prices need 3 to 12 months paid upfront.
- Data sharing. The FTC, Utah and California sued Hims & Hers on July 29, 2026. The complaint alleges health data went to advertising platforms and that billing and cancellation were unclear; the case is pending (FTC).
Each program's record, with the source for every line, is on its "is it legit" page, for example is Hims legit and is BlueChew legit.
Two more checks before you pay: whether the product is an FDA-approved generic or a compounded chew, and how hard it is to cancel.
Questions
FAQ
Is it legal to buy Viagra or sildenafil online?
Yes, with a valid prescription from a clinician licensed in your state, filled by a licensed pharmacy. Buying it without a prescription is not legal in the US, and those sites are where fakes turn up.
How can I tell if an online pharmacy is real?
It requires a prescription, lists a US address and phone number, and holds a licence you can confirm with your state board of pharmacy. Our [scam checker](/scam-checker) runs through the list.
Are ED pills from Hims, Ro or BlueChew real?
They are prescribed by licensed clinicians and filled by US pharmacies. Generic sildenafil and tadalafil tablets from these programs are FDA-approved generics; chews, mints and combination tablets are compounded and not FDA-approved.
Does a LegitScript seal mean a site is safe?
A seal served by LegitScript with a seal ID is a strong sign the company went through LegitScript's review. A logo the site hosts itself proves nothing. Check the company on LegitScript's own site.
Are "natural" ED supplements safe?
Be wary. The FDA keeps finding undeclared sildenafil and tadalafil in products sold as supplements, which can be dangerous with heart medicines.
What is the cheapest safe way to get ED pills online?
A licensed program with the visit included, or a prescription filled at a cash pharmacy. The cheapest all-in plan we track is Strut Health at $16 a month; see [the full ranking](/best).
